What causes vaginal dryness?

In search of a female dryness cure

The vagina is an incredible organ that self-cleans and self-lubricates. Arousal spikes hormones for added lubrication and the vagina is able to maintain balanced moisture levels for comfort in and out of the bedroom. Or, at least, it’s supposed to.

Vaginal dryness, also known as vaginal atrophy, can result in burning or itching sensations, post-coital bleeding, and pain or discomfort during sex. The umbrella term is quite broad, and it covers a wide range of symptoms with an even wider range in severity. Before we look for a female dryness cure let’s understand what causes this issue.

When does vaginal dryness occur?

Short-term bouts of female dryness can occur and may be linked to anxiety, allergic reactions, dehydration, and even the use of cold or flu medication. However, the root cause of long-term vaginal atrophy is almost always caused by low estrogen levels. This can occur during:

  • Menopause
  • Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding
  • Surgical menopause with the removal of the ovaries
  • Cancer treatments or taking anti-estrogen drugs

How does this happen?

The ovaries are the main producer of estrogen in the body, which keeps the lining of the vagina thick, elastic, and lubricated. With decreased estrogen, it becomes thinner, less elastic, and dry. In some cases, the lining may even change color due to dehydration. Some estrogen drops are initiated by medication, but female dryness is primarily experienced during natural hormonal shifts.

What can you do about vaginal dryness?

A 2017 article in Climacteric found that an estimated 40% to 50% of all peri- menopausal and post-menopausal women experience vaginal dryness. However, only less than 4% of women explore treatment options. Lubricants and OTC moisturizers are a great first option to consider, but may not be enough. Although there is no magical female dryness cure, treatments can alleviate pain and discomfort. Women of all ages are encouraged to contact their OB/GYN for an exam and advising on treatment options. These options include the FemiLift Vaginal Laser Treatment by Alma Lasers. This treatment is minimally invasive and virtually painless and can significantly improve symptoms.
